Using the printer locator dropdowns worked very smoothly. We were able to get right to both of our target laser printers for our research comparison and see everything on offer. For the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw, the 206A 4-pack was much less expensive than anywhere else at $169.95. Our one hesitation? Some of the wording on the site was a little... off. It comes across sounding like maybe YB Toner isn't exactly US-based. Easily find the right cartridges

Using the dropdowns on the Ink 4 Less "finder” tool was an easy way to find the right cartridges for the two laser printers we used as a comparison across retailers, one color model by HP and a black-and-white model by Brother. How did this store measure up? With respect to the HP color laser printer, we weren't offered the combo packs we spotted at some of this store's rivals; on the other hand, we could choose among all three types of toner cartridges (OEM, remanufactured, and compatible), and even among those options we saw ways to save by choosing ones where the user would swap the chip (sounds complicated, but that's why it's at a discount). At the very cheapest, the cartridges for this particular HP printer were about $40 each, so you could theoretically build your own 4-pack for about $160: $20 less than you would pay somewhere else.

Some models may not have many options

On the Brother B&W toner in our comparison (TN730), the results were a little less robust. We were offered a compatible high-yield model (TN760) for a very reasonable $29.99 or an OEM TN730 cartridge for $54.99. There were only three other results on the list at Ink 4 Less, and two of them were drum units and not the cartridges we were looking for.

A few "blemishes”

Visiting the 1 Ink site recently, we got a pop-up discount offering a savings of 10% on our first order if we entered our email address. We spotted a little typo there ("dont'” instead of "don't”), and we also found a few coupon codes on the site that had expired the day before. Not the best first impression, but not a huge issue either.

Thousands of shopper reviews despite BBB's "NR”

Despite being in business for over two decades, 1 Ink supposedly doesn't have enough traction as a company to even get a rating from the Better Business Bureau. That strikes us as odd, given that the site itself proudly redirects visitors to its 2,400+ store reviews on Google, with a praiseworthy average of 4.7 out of 5 stars. That's where you'll find lots of customers who say they never have a problem with their toner and inkjet cartridges from 1 Ink, that the customer service is on point, and that delivery is usually quick. The feedback on Yotpo (all verified purchases) was even more abundant, with over 7,800 reviews for the store and 31,000+ on specific printer products purchased. We have no idea how that winds up with a "NR” from the BBB, but clearly 1 Ink is quite active as a retailer.

Prices are good but inventory is often more limited

So, now that that's out of the way, how did 1 Ink do with the two toner cartridge models we used across all of the retailers in our review? On the Brother B&W laser printer, the TN730 didn't show up at all, but the high-yield TN760 was priced even more affordably than what we usually found for the standard yield cartridge elsewhere: just $25.99 for a compatible cartridge, with over 70 five-star ratings from shoppers. However, our HP Color LaserJet toner cartridges were much more expensive: the same 4-pack we could get elsewhere for around $185 was selling for $279.99 on 1 Ink. It took us a minute to realize that it was a high-yield 4-pack (and so it made sense that it was more expensive), but the standard yield wasn't on offer here.

As long as your order is over $65, it'll ship for free. We also appreciate that 1 Ink has a 180-day product warranty. So, if you decide to stock up and maybe not use your toner cartridges immediately, you'll still be able to get a replacement or refund if there's an issue when you install them a few months down the road.

We're happy to give 1 Ink a solidly-average rating of 3 stars. There are plenty of satisfied customers who recommend shopping for your toner cartridges here, and if you find what you need for your printer at a price you like, there's no reason not to click "order now”. But, because the selection isn't quite as robust as some of the rivals we evaluated, and we were a bit put off by the typos and expired savings offers, 1 Ink doesn't quite land among our favorite toner cartridge options.

Ink E-Sale entered the online toner cartridges market in 2014, claiming to be the "most popular toner cartridge brand in North America" and a preferred long-term provider for "many corporations." While we're a bit skeptical about these assertions, let's take a look into what this company has to offer. Everything available here is either remanufactured or compatible, with no OEM options for toner cartridges.

Pricing isn't the most competitive on some printer models

Pricewise, Ink E-Sale didn't offer anything exceptional when we looked at our two comparison laser printers. On the HP model we used with 206A as the cartridge part identifier, we got just one result: a replacement 4-pack of black plus 3 colors for $199.99. Not only is that price about $15 higher than many of the competitors on our list, but it was also the only option other than the high-yield 4-pack. In other words, if you only needed a new black cartridge or one of the colors, you'd be out of luck at Ink E-Sale.

Similar results with black and white printers

The black-and-white printer made by Brother had a few more options for the TN730 cartridge we used; but, just like the HP printer we mentioned, we only found all of the available options when we went to the specific cartridge, then entered our printer model to see all options. The compatible cartridge was priced on par with rival sites at $28.99, and we were surprised to see a 2-pack of the high-yield cartridge for just a little more ($35.99).

Save when you make an account

Interested in savings? You won't get a discount until you add a set of toner cartridges to your online cart. At that point, you're encouraged to create an account by entering your email and a password, leading to a 10% discount on your purchase. Additionally, all orders ship for free within the lower 48 states.

Satisfaction guarantee

As for the Ink E-Sale's 24-month satisfaction guarantee, it initially seems impressive, but the fine print in the FAQ states that "consumables cannot be returned once they are opened." Round the clock customer service? Not so much.

Ink E-Sale touts "24/7 Customer Service." However, you can only reach them by phone during regular weekday business hours; otherwise, you'll have to resort to email, their online form, or the chat feature and wait for a response.

Reputation is just "meh”

When it comes to customer feedback, Ink E-Sale falls short: no listing with the Better Business Bureau, no reviews on their own site, and minimal comments on other typical review platforms. Where feedback exists, it's more mixed than anything. While some users report having good experiences with remanufactured and compatible toner cartridges, others complain about the items not lasting as long as OEM options and difficulties reaching helpful customer service.

Not a favorite for toner cartridges

Add to that some of the typos and non-native English grammar we found scattered throughout Ink E-Sale's online store (like "extending to 60 days return and exchange policy, just make you free of worries”) and you'll understand why this retailer only earns two stars from us. Ink E-Sale clearly struggles to compete in the online toner cartridges industry.

Ink Plus Toner embarked on its journey in 2004, specializing in the sale of OEM, remanufactured, and compatible toner cartridges. However, although this retailer used to be among our top choices, we no longer recommend it. Let's take a look at the reasons why.

Inventory is hit-or-miss

First, how did Ink Plus Toner do when we looked for the two laser printers' cartridges used as an example across all of the sites on our list? For the Brother TN730 cartridge, we were offered a compatible model for $29.95: right around the price we found elsewhere, give or take a dollar. Ink Plus Toner also had a 5-pack for $134.75 if you really wanted to stock up. Those were all easy to find using the dropdowns under "select your printer”.

Couldn't find our printer in their list

On the other hand, we couldn't find our HP Color LaserJet in the list of printer models at Ink Plus Toner, so we had to search by the part number (HP 206A). We were given a list of toner cartridges with a different ID, and they weren't compatible with the model we were searching for. That's a huge downside when most rival retailers had no problem selling us multiple versions of the HP cartridge we needed.

Outdated

Ink Plus Toner used to hold an "A+” from the Better Business Bureau, but now the BBB has the company designated as simply "Not Rated” because of insufficient information to issue a grade. Positive feedback is evident elsewhere, with an average of 4.4 stars out of 5 on Trustpilot from 300+ reviews and 4.21 stars on Reseller Ratings, coming from over 1,200 reviews. And yet, we found no reviews on either site after 2020. Even the site's copyright date was almost two years out of date during this review.

On a road to nowhere

And that's just the beginning of our doubts about whether Ink Plus Toner is actually open for business. While we managed to take our order to the checkout page, uncertainty about whether or not it would actually go through kept us from placing the order. The "contact us” text at the bottom of the site wasn't even a link, the social media links at the page's base directed to mostly-inactive feeds on Twitter (now X) and Facebook (not to mention the fact that the links for the now-defunct G+ and renamed-Twitter were reversed on the logos at the bottom of the page), and all the other links at the bottom of the Ink Plus Toner site were no longer functional... most noteworthy being the ones under the "Get Help” header.

Don't waste your time

Ink Plus Toner used to be a cartridge company we could rely on. Not anymore! But, we'll just have to wish them farewell and move on to a retailer that's paying more attention to their website (and everything on it). Lucky for you, you won't have any trouble finding your toner cartridges (and excellent customer service) with most of the competitors on our list.

We had no trouble following those prompts to find the cartridges for our two sample printers, the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw and the Brother Compact Monochrome Laser Printer HL-L2350DW. We were offered both OEM and compatible cartridges for the HP toner: $199.96 for the 4-cartridge set (about $20 more than our lowest-priced store), and $60 to $80 for the individual OEM cartridges (black or the 3 color ones). The compatible cartridge for the Brother printer we used for comparison (TN730, regular yield) was a little cheaper than most places at $24.99.

4 Inkjets provides generous guarantees and refund policies, surpassing many of the toner cartridge stores we evaluated. While some retailers may redirect you to the manufacturer when problems arise with OEM cartridges, 4 Inkjets stands ready to assist if you reach out within 30 days. And, for all compatible and remanufactured cartridges, you have the option of obtaining a refund or replacement within the first year for any issues.

Guarantees extend beyond first year

Even beyond the first year, you can still secure a replacement or store credit. This ensures that if you prefer stocking up on your toner cartridges well in advance, you won't be stuck with something that doesn't work once installed. That's something to appreciate.

BBB grade falls to an "F”

Unfortunately, that's where the good vibes stop with 4 Inkjets. Their reputation has, in a word, tanked since the last time we checked them out. Their rating from the Better Business Bureau has dropped to an "F” for failing to respond to 3 of the 5 complaints filed there. That's not a ton of complaints, but we found less-than-happy customers in other places.

Reputation in a tailspin

On Reseller Ratings alone, 4 Inkjets' average score was just 1 star across nearly 4,000 reviews, and it doesn't get lower than that. Ditto that for Trustpilot and other places too. Rants mentioned promised refunds that went months without being processed, packages not arriving in time for the toner to be used when it was needed, and the list goes on and on. It's not great when you see that a retailer has "0% positive reviews over the last six months”, but that's where 4 Inkjets is landing these days.

Sorry, 4 Inkjets. Not only are you not someone we would recommend "for inkjets”, we can't give you our endorsement for toner cartridges either. When you're shopping for toner cartridges, other companies offer lower pricing, better customer service, and a wider selection to choose from. Feel free to pass 4 Inkjets right on by.

E-Z Ink got its start in a NYC basement back in 2007. Unfortunately, as you dive into what this toner cartridge store offers, you may wonder if they're still operating out of someone's downstairs. Keep reading to discover why.

Free shipping on all orders

When we first visited the E-Z Ink site, we got a pop-up offering a $5 coupon if we subscribed to their email list. So far, so good. We also noticed that this store provides free shipping on all orders, not just ones that meet a certain minimum sale amount. Great!

Product descriptions are confusing

However, when we used the dropdowns to find the HP Color LaserJet printer we used as one of our comparisons, we were disappointed to see that both toner cartridges (because there were only two listed) were sold out. We fared slightly better when we looked for the Brother black-and-white laser printer in our comparison, spotting the TN730-compatible cartridge for $25.99 and a 10% discount if our order was over $30. But, the labeling was really confusing: the site used multiple product numbers on each cartridge (one for the standard yield and the other for high-yield), which would leave most people wondering which one they're actually getting.

Limited and not-enthusiastic customer feedback

E-Z Ink's reputation isn't the easiest to track down, and even then we weren't always sure we'd found the right company. BBB? If the listing we spotted is accurate, it had this toner cartridge retailer as "Not Rated” and almost zero info. So, we jumped to the usual spots where customers leave comments (like Trustpilot, Reseller Ratings, and so on), and even there the feedback was few and far between. Unfortunately, even out of those small handful of reviews, the overall picture painted wasn't a good one. They were often evenly split between 1- and 5-star ratings. One person left a rant saying that every page printed was partly covered with black toner, and out of a 2-cartridge purchase the first one failed after being used very little.

How long is the warranty, anyway?

That's a huge disappointment, given that E-Z Ink supposedly backs their cartridges with a 1- or 2 year warranty. Why the "or”? Well, that's because we found conflicting information on the website. In some places, it boasts a 360-day purchase warranty, while in others it says that you're protected against defects for up to 2 years.

Nothing to see here

We'll have to pass on recommending E-Z Ink as a good place to get your toner cartridges (if you can even find the ones you need). Their inventory is lower than average, and even getting free shipping on all orders isn't enough to move the needle in this retailer's favor. When you consider their reputation (or generalized lack of one) and the fact that up to half (or more) of the comments available aren't positive, it's easy to understand why E-Z Ink is at the bottom of our list.
