Beautiful Japanese stop motion - Like a poem. drifts by with such simplicity but also packs so many themes into a 16 minute running time. Really Lovely.

Film #60 of my 2018 MUBI Viewings
*****
Beautiful short film that is haunting and emotionally complex.
With shades of the Quay Brothers, this movie has gorgeously created stop-motion animation that seems to be a perfect fit for this bittersweet and emotionally arresting short film.
The music is delicate and heartbreaking, full of rich tones that add layers of depth to this dialogue-free short. The connection of twin sisters who are unexpectedly separated and then must come to terms with that loss of contact. What can reconnect them? From what can we find that in our own lives? What/who do we turn to? Can a bond like that ever be replaced?
What a fantastic piece of art.

I never realised my life needed stop-motion animated moss, but now I've seen it, it's obvious.

Tragically beautiful. This artistry is breathtaking. Can my life be this poetic in stop motion animation? Please?

Around the World in Cinema 2018 - Japan
"It seems a rotten thing to cover this short, especially as after I'll praise it, you the reader will curse me as it'll be difficult to see. But to write about anime, I feel you have to step outside that term to also include Japanese animation in general, not only encompassing experimental work but areas like stop motion and puppetry. There's an unexpected delight in seeing eggs made from clay, painstakingly motioned into cooked ones in a tiny handmade pan, and as I hold animation above even most live action cinema, little details like this which have to be relied on to be made from imagination, reference and what materials are at…

I feel this can be definitely considered as poetry in it's fragmented, yet emotionally cohesive nature.
I felt like the conclusion took away from it by being too drawn out, but other than that - this swept me away completely. The stop-motion animation is some of the most gorgeous I have ever seen and the sounddesign is legitimately transporting. -

Beautiful and poignant. The score is perfect.

Review by Ben Hecking ★★★★
A beautifully animated Japanese stop-motion short film about twin-sisters united by grief. I think. To be honest I found the story a little hard to follow. I know there is a Tsunami, a snow-globe/marble, a giant rabbit who seems to connect the two girls with an afterlife and some of the most impressive stop motion I’ve seen.
If you’re a fan of animation then it’s well worth checking out. There’s no dialogue but the score is beautiful and provides the right level of emotional context. Just don’t expect to understand what it’s all about. It might require more than one viewing for that.

resting at work and this film is finding me holding back tears.. there is nothing more sad to me than an innocent soul who wishes for a good bond with someone but only fated to meet a tragic end, despite always believing in the light at the end of the tunnel.
